Wild in the Garden

Hope you enjoyed meeting some of my neighbours. Please don’t worry about Legless. Although he tends to land with a thump he manages everything else quite well and can certainly ‘take off’ very quickly. He started coming into the garden a couple of years ago when he only had his foot missing. Earlier this year he seems to have met with another accident which damaged his ‘good’ leg. He is well known around the pond and I am not the only one who feeds him :)

Isn't it lovely to see the young uns going forth in the world..a totally fascinating and amusing blog Gee, thank you sooo much!
I'm glad to report that my hedgehog has returned again this year, looking very plump, which means my hostas are almost immaculate!
It's great to see return visitors like your plucky duck, they obviously feel quite secure in your garden.

Lovely, Gee....we haven't seen many butterflies this year either. But plenty of bees! And surprisingly, we don't have many one footed ducks in our garden either!!!!!

Thank you all for your comments. I have a rather sneaky cat that comes into the garden regularly now - he hides in the bushes awaiting unwary birds! I have sent him packing on several occasions and I've laid prickly branches down where he lies in wait to deter him which sounds wicked but I don't want Millie to spot him! She is not cat friendly.

I read that Spike Milligan used to use an air pistol to sting cats and make them retreat from his garden - when someone said he was being cruel to cats, he said, not half as cruel as the cats were to the birds they caught. Not sure how practical that would be in a large garden, let alone how legal these days.

A water pistol is a much safer and more legal alternative, Fran, and one I used on the two terrible terriers I had before Millie. Just gives a shock but no harm done :)

been thinking about a long range water pistol for the squirrels!

We had a cat when we first moved here, kept watching the birds... I sent kayleigh out a few times to chase it away and now it doesnt visit... :))

lol I still think that wiring the metal mesh fence to the mains would be most effective .....

We have 'Spooky' cat sleeps under a shrub below the bird feeders. She can't stay awake for long to do any damage. They know she's there anyway. Other cats I chase away. Her shrub has had a short back and sides today, as it rained last night. I think she will be a bit dismayed but street cats like her are cheeky. Plenty of other shady places she can choose in the garden.
