Summer Hills

These are my hills.
They’re not majestic hills,
But they are part of me, and I am part of them.

I was brought up among these hills –
My soul is here.
This is where I was born; and this is where I shall die.

These hills are bleak and windswept,
Empty and dreary
But I could never live in any other place.

The spirit of my ancestors moves over these hills.
My father is here,
And my mother.

Other places may be more beautiful,
But I belong here among these hills.

Lovely blog, Hywel and stunning views across 'your' hills. It's good to feel so closely connected to the area you live in. I feel the same way about the Romney Marsh although I wasn't born there. When I moved there nearly 40 years ago it was like coming home :)

Beautiful blog - thank you

25 Jan, 2010

It's a lovely blog Hywel, lovely to see all what surrounds where you live, I don't find any of this bleak and a lovely place where your mum and dad are too in spirit. I would rather lay down and die amongst these hills, than slowly die in some old bleak old peoples home,

25 Jan, 2010

where i grew up there were similar countryside and we used to take an old sack to the steeper ones and slide down them on our bottoms.
always fun but now in am on a flat plain and the hills are far away.
thanks for the lovely views

My family hail from a part of Scotland that has scenery very much like that Hywel - I love it, I lived most of my life in London (not too many hills there) and now live in South Lincs near Fenland so no hills here - your pics remind me of my spritual home. :0)

25 Jan, 2010

Very moving Hywel.Such a strong spiritual connection...and indeed seeing your rolling hills and hearing your words, why would you want to live anywhere else ? Thank you for reminding us of our roots.........

I understand what you mean Hywel, and you have expressed it with such feeling. I love Wales, the hills and the valleys, the fields, in fact everything your photo's show. I am not Welsh but have always, in the 13 years I have lived here, felt 'at home'. Like I belong. Most of my adult life was spent moving around the country, moves enforced by work. Wales is the only place I have chosen to live....because whenever I visited this area I felt so right being here.

25 Jan, 2010

But I could not live in any part of Wales Pottygardener. I could only live here in this bit :o))

Thank you all for liking my blog

Yes Hywel,
thank you for lifting our spirits on this grey January Day!
Although I am Welsh I grew up in Devon, another area with rolling hills.

I can understand why you love the area where you live. You look very well - long may you be sending us pictures of this part of Wales!

25 Jan, 2010

Thanks Rachelsmum. It's been nice and sunny here.
I love Devon. My grandfather's family were from there.

It`s called contentment Hywel and a wonderful way to live one`s life, I love to visit other places and often think how nice it would be to live in such beautiful surroundings when I`m there but in all honesty, when I`m either walking or being driven around my town and it`s surrounding countryside, I know that I belong, Here Amidst Its Ancient Charms, thats what it say`s as one enters our town and like you with your hills, I cannot imagine being anywhere else..
Your photo`s are lovely Hywel and the views are great.
BTW..Does Blodyn know some gent in blue keeps popping up in your blogs, LOL......

25 Jan, 2010

I understand your feelings - and you are very lucky to be so 'grounded'.....

Hywel'the national anthem is right 'my home sweet home is in Wales'it is lovely were you live but I am in love with were I grew up Clwyd and flintshire, every time I travel through north Wales I am entharoled, and filed with plesaure and I have been doing it for most of my life, and even now every time is like the first time, I love to take some one with me and watch their face and listen to the wows as we go around every bend and they see a conpleat change of senery.

Wow what a wonderful sense of belonging
so unusual in these days of buy and sell
Richard and I have lived within a 15 mile radius of home all our lives and we know what you mean.
I feel sorry for the children of today who dont unerstand what it feels like to be a part of a landscape.
Our son does and never wants us to sell and move so he can keep coming home.
Your words are really lovely too very poetic
Lovely:)

So beautiful. I felt like I was reading a classic piece of literature that reached deep into my soul and warmed the emotions there. Indeed, the photos reminded me of the concrete details in Bronte' novels that have captured me since childhood. Thank you for sharing.

Very beautiful Hywel...it is a great gift you have been given, to be able to live among the hills you love so much...but I suspect you know that! =)

Your blog has got me thinking Hywel. What is our heritage, is it where we grew up or does it go much deeper and is embedded and ingrained in our ancestral genes? My parents who were from different parts of Italy, both moved to UK after the war. They met and got married in Cheshire, where my sister and I were born and grew up. I then married an Italian and moved to Italy when I was 22. So .... what and where is my heritage? When people ask me where I come from, I instantly say I'm British and I still say I'm going "home" when I plan my trips over, even after over 35 years that I've been here. I still drool when I see masses of of very "Cheshirish" daffodils and lilac and lily of valley and bluebells - all because their vision and smell remind me of "home" - so Hywel, I'd like to thank you for helping me put a few dots on some of the i's of my heritage ..
