snowdrop walk at lytham hall blackpool

today was the first day of the snowdrop walk at lytham hall so as baz wasnt working i bullied him into taking me not that he really minds, anyway it was a bit of a dull day but wrapped up well wasnt to bad,
Lytham hall is now owned by Lytham town trust and is kept entirely on voluntary help and fundraising,
snowdrps to be found here are genus GALANTHUS, a member of the family AMARYILDACEAE.
it was Linnaeus who created the genus Galanthus for the snowdrop, and restricted the Leucoioc for the snowflake.in 1753 he furnished the snowdrop with a single species Galanthus Nivalis, or comman garden snowdrop.
Linnaeus derived the name Galanthus from the greek gala meaning milk, and anthos meaning flower, but it had never been called the milk flower in england.
the name snowdrop is not old and comes from the german Schneetrophen,
which refers to pendents or eardrops(earings) worn in the seventeenth centuries.
there were older english names given to snowdrops, candlemas bells, fair maids of febuary, and white ladies, all related to church festivals of candlemas febuary 2nd and refer to the white robed maidens in procession which took place on the feast of purificcation.
in shakespears time it was known as the bulbous white violet.
also the first poem writen with snowdrop in it was written by thomas tickle (1686-1740.
first picture is the hall
a grade 1 listed 18th century manor house
it was a lovely walk taking about an hour and a half with a stop for tea halfway.
above baz looking at one of the many holly trees there, also lots and lots of rodadendrons which would be a wonderfull sight when all in flower, anyway we enjoyed our walk today and couldnt leave without buying a couple of pots of snowdrops could i! lol
hope you enjoyed our walk, would like to go back when the house is open in summer ;o))

9 Feb, 2010
it will be a trip out wont it ;o)) x
9 Feb, 2010
It certainly will, i'm not going out very much at moment, just feel quilty if i leave Smokey to long, he's not going out at all now, but not lost anymore blood for a while, but he just sleeps all the time except for going to litter tray or for something to eat, and then he only moves very slow, he's back at vets next Tuesday.
9 Feb, 2010
poor smokey, not good is it carol, well as long as no pain and he eats at least he has you to take good care of him, i know how you feel, dont like to go out for long incase anything should happen, awfull really, give him a kiss from me xx
9 Feb, 2010
Will do, i feel sorry for him, i know even though its cold today he would normaly find a shelted spot in the sun and lay in it, you know its funny he's not used a litter tray since he was about 3mths, and i've put it in bathroom down stairs and if i'm in there he will walk in and if he sees me he walks back out again and waits till i come out then he goes and uses the tray, its as if he wonts his own privacey bless him x.
9 Feb, 2010
aww they dont like being watched when on the tray, angelina didnt either, at least he goes on it, he would feel bad if he had an accident in the house x
