Houseleek BABIES :o)

A few weeks ago I mailed some of my little houseleeks to Dawnsaunt.

As a surprise for her, I included a poem inside the package.

Then this week Jacque requested garden poems for GoY,

so Dawn has kindly agreed that I can reprint my poem here :o).

To Dawn
with love from Terratoonie
HOUSELEEK BABIES

Houseleek babies, just for Dawn
Brought to you this winter morn.
Terratoonie sends a greeting
Warns you that we do love EATING.

Though we’re just like tiny buttons,
We must tell you – we are GLUTTONS !
Feed us, and before your eyes
We’ll swell up to CABBAGE SIZE !

Each of us a special jewel -
Put us into nursery school.
Love us, and before too long,
We’ll grow up all big and strong.

Keep us comfy, warm and cosy,
And our future will be rosy.
Give us lots of Christmas dinners
Then we’ll be your PLANT-SHOW WINNERS !

We’ll be famous, we’ll be groovy -
“Houseleek Babes” will be a movie !
Interviewed by all the media,
We’ll be plant stars on GoYPEDIA !!!

Photos are of Sempervivum calcareum.

11 Dec, 2009

Thanks, Uma, Grenville and Alan, and Cat...
Yes, I'm going to enjoy editing the GoYpedia Houseleeks page with all the different varieties...
Cat... I've not heard that name "Hens and Chicks"..
I just googled those words and it is the same as Sempervivum Tectorum...:o)

11 Dec, 2009

You were right TT, it raised a smile! I'm not sure which are the stars, the house leeks or the poetry! Your poetry is brilliant and I didn't know houseleeks could be so beautiful. Now I know what to do with them, maybe mine will look good too. I thought they thrived on neglect.....well that's my excuse LOL

11 Dec, 2009

That's interesting Uma... maybe called Hens and Chickens in the UK, but just that I haven't heard that name....

I'm pleased this blog made you smile, Lily...
....just hoping everyone else won't expect a poem with any plant I send... Lol. :o)

11 Dec, 2009

LOL...I call them all Hen & Chicks TT..there are many varieties..that is all I have ever known any of them as, from childhood..I loved the ones my Grandmothers grew and my mom had them too..I have never had good luck so much as they did. Perhaps I need to take a page from your book!

11 Dec, 2009

Nice that you have the memories of these plants from your mom and Grandmother, Cat...

Hi Janey... My houseleeks stay out all winter and seem to survive well, but they are near my dog run, so maybe the dogs keep them warm..Lol.

BusyLizzy...Your houseleeks must have had a head for heights... but planted around the fish pond they must have looked pretty :o)

12 Dec, 2009

great poem and lovely houseleeks..TT

12 Dec, 2009

Hello Mad and Holly...
On behalf of the greedy baby houseleeks...
...thank you. :o)
Sometimes when I wake in the morning, I find I've written a verse of poetry in my sleep... The verse runs through my head, and I have to grab a pencil to write it down..Lol.

12 Dec, 2009

a poetic brain how great......TT.....i must admit i tend to think of a lot of rhymes as well..........

12 Dec, 2009

Hello Holly..
That sounds jolly.

Ah, you find it so...
The poems just flow!

In the garden or shop
The rhymes won't stop!

On quite a few days.
It works these ways.

I guess there are those
Who prefer to write prose.

Can drive you quite dotty.
Each verse gets more potty !

But just one more time
I must make a rhyme.

he he he

12 Dec, 2009

Great TT enjoyed both the poems very much.:o))

12 Dec, 2009

Thanks Clarice :o) x

12 Dec, 2009

Hi Terra, love your verses! I plant Sempervivums to fill small gaps here and there in the garden. :o)

Sandra x

12 Dec, 2009

Hi Sandra... Thanks.
Yes, I want to plant lots more of these.
Do you find they survive the winters okay ?

12 Dec, 2009

Very good TT ! :o)

12 Dec, 2009

HOW do you do it TT? !!!!! I'm green with envy, as I couldn't create a rhyme to save my life!! I used to have a friend who was absolutely brilliant at personalised limericks -

12 Dec, 2009

Thanks, Hywel and Terry60 ...
Must admit I have to be in the right frame of mind to write poetry...
usually early in morning...
....later in the day I feel brain-dead.. Lol.

12 Dec, 2009

At least you're alert in the morning TT - that's when I seem to suffer MOST from brain death !! Come bedtime there is no redemption for me and I'm totally in cuckoo land !!

12 Dec, 2009

Lol. :o)

12 Dec, 2009

Very nice poem, TT.

I haven't grow Houseleeks in many, many years! I used to have some in my parents' garden before leaving to go to Spain in the early 70s. I'm not sure now but I have an idea I grew some in Spain as well.

In all these years I never knew they do well on feeding as they have always been associated with the poorest of soils imaginable - not even soil really as they are quite common on rooftops where "soil" is generally in extremely scant supply!

12 Dec, 2009

Love houseleeks (first plants I grew as a child), love the poem (and the new page on these), and love the fact that I have been able to place this on another GOYpedia page! LOL!!! :-D)

13 Dec, 2009

Hi Balcony...
I'm pleased you like the poem.
You're right...the houseleeks are very undemanding little plants...might not need too many Christmas dinners...Lol. :o)

Hello David....
Lol...oh yes, Gardening With Friends....!
Hadn't realised... well done !
Dawn is definitely a friend. :o)

13 Dec, 2009

LOL......TT.........
I think like me
you must be
just a little potty.
The poems just flow
and you dont know
if your going a little dotty......

Great verses keep them up TT...........

13 Dec, 2009

Hello Holly....

Just when I thought the poems had stopped....
Too late......... up another rhyme popped....Lol. :o)

14 Dec, 2009

Never seen this particular one TT, gorgeous colours, great poem :-))))))))

14 Dec, 2009

Thanks, Simbad....
I'm getting more interested in houseleeks...
Going to grow lots of them next year :o)

14 Dec, 2009

I must confess Terra that I just do not like houseleeks, however , I truly loved your little ditty.

14 Dec, 2009

Hello gardening friends this cold wintery day,
soon Santa pulled by Reindeer will be coming in a sleigh

Tis the season when a special baby houseleek poem was born,
so tis fitting these lovely photos do this gardening site adorn,

But then alas GF’s poem came along and caused all to yawn,
all because of the poem and nice leeks TT had sprung on Dawn.

18 Dec, 2009

GF's poem caused no niggles...
Truth is - gave us lots of giggles...

Winter snow, and ice and gales...
Banished by your words from Wales...

We were cold and damp and restive..
But your warmth has made us festive. xxx

18 Dec, 2009

Found it! enjoyed it, thanks Tt:-)
