Some nice colour in the garden still. This photinia davidiana palette, (stranvaesia when I bought it) was cut to the ground and now look at it, I love this shrub the colours are as good as flowers I think. You may spot the odd sweet pea, growing through the viburnum summer snowflake (far right bottom pics). This was also chopped right down and has made a good comeback.

This is heuchera havana which I bought from Plantagogo on Vicky’s recommendation. I have waited patiently for flowers and here they come. This is a fantastic coloured leaf.

Here are brunnera SIBLINGS, jack frost and looking glass, the spreading plant is another from Plantagogo, corydalis blackberry wine, and boy does it spread. The flowering heuchera at the back is berry smoothie, and to the left is h.cascade dawn, both Vicky.

The incomparable heucherella sweet tea, in the right place, this plant shines out I think.

One of the pensham penstemons with weigela and coleus.

Heuchera marmalade, what a beauty, and has been all year. The slugs (do slugs eat them?) and the vineweevil grubs have not found it yet:-) convolvulus cneorum in foreground, not flowered much, but lovely leaf and only planted this year.

Rose carpet, full of buds, weighed down by rain.

Anyone recognise the large leaf at front? it has quite sharp hairs on back and stems. Must have come in topsoil, I’ve dug out lots. Hope it’s not a problem. Alstroemerias providing highlights here. Wish it would stop raining, first day of October not nice.

Lamium beacon silver, always bright and accommodating.

Lovely hebe which I’ve forgotten the name of at the moment, but it’s more purpley than this shows, lovely.

I ordered some helenium sahins early in the vain hope they would be decorating my borders by now, but they still haven’t arrived. Definitely no more mail order from these large companies. I’ll use small growers from now on. Hopefully my garden will look much better next year when it’s all settled in. I’m off to walk the dogs now:-)

Lovely planting there. The Heucheras are fantastic, and I have lots but haven't had any slug damage so think they leave them alone. My Havanna from Plantagogo wasnt doing too well so have now put it in a pot and seems to be improving, but no flowers yet. Did you take cuttings of the Brunnera, as I have a Jack Frost, new this year and wondered about that.
Lovely pictures, enjoyed it very much

Wow,Ba,your garden is lovely, and I love all your planting.I am really getting into Heuchera's,so that is going to be a must next year.I WILL find space, but don't know where yet.I am making notes of all the lovely ones I have seen on here.
Sorry, but I don't know the name of the unknown plant. It isn't a Bergenia is it?
Don't really think so,as you said it had hairy leaves..so just a wild, and probably wrong guess...

Nice to see the two Brunneras planted together for a better comparison. Not sure about cuttings Cinderella, but they do divide quite readily :) x

Your hairy leafed unknown - it's a weed, with very deep roots, get them out when they're small, or as soon as you notice them, don't allow any to grow at all. Has a very pretty spike of blue flowers, but so invasive and once the plants get a certain size, the roots really are impossible to extract. I can't remember what its called, but it can be mistaken for foxglove when just leaves - difference is, foxglove leaves are not unpleasant to handle, this one is.

Lots going on there, you have a lovely garden! :)))

Bamboo, I let it grow in case it was a new sort of foxglove lol. It isn't comfrey is it? Cinders, , my havana took a while to get going to, but is lovely now. If I remember rightly they like quite dryish shadish (technical). If you look on Plantagogo it will tell you. This is also my first brunnera jack frost and looking glass, but they came through winter in pots, so must be rather hardy. Think they wouldn't like winter wet too much. Better next year I hope Bloomer and your guess is as good as minelol. As you can see Bluespruce, the looking glass seems rather weaker than the jack frost, it didn't flower this year either. Thanks michaella and thanks all for your kind comments:-)

Thanks for that Ba.

I meant to say I really like that Photinia... not sure whether the rogue plant is comfrey, I always call it speedwell in my head cos of the blue flowers, but it could be a form of comfrey, the leaves are rough enough...

1 Oct, 2010

I think the rogue plant is a kind of borage. My garden was full of it when I moved in about 8 years ago, and they still sometimes come up - they have to be dug up roots and all with the same sort of long narrow tool you use for digging weeds out of the lawn. I thought they were foxgloves at first. They have spikes of blue flowers and the leaves are a bit like comfrey. (I grow comfrey to make liquid fertiliser).

Love the autumn colour in your garden!

Oh yea, that's it, borage.

You do have a lot of colour Ba, I really like that marmalade heuchara and admit I`m getting quite a long list for next year,lol,....
Atrocious here today so good to browse and see garden pics, ......

Lovely collection of Heuchera's and love Jack Frost and Looking Glass;0)

You have lots of lovely plants. I don't understand why people lament the passing of summer.
I hope that big leaf isn't going to be a problem. I had topsoil and it was full ov weeds. I had a job to get rid of them.

1 Oct, 2010

love your garden and lots of color too love hecheras they are diff arnt they . so many to choose. i have lots of them ,not the ones u have tho

Your planting is lovely, Ba....the mix of colours really show against one another. I'm thinking Heuchera's will definitely find a way into our new garden too.

I will need topsoil in the spring when my garden is planned out and borders established....I hope I choose a good firm as I certainly don't want to introduce weeds back into the garden after the fight we'll have had to get rid of so many already!

Lovely blog and pics Ba, I really like your Heucheras. Next years list is getting longer and longer! It's rained here all day today but I've been off sick and in bed :-((

1 Oct, 2010

Oh that's not good news, Annella. Sure hope you are fighting fit very soon. Take care...you'll have to get out seed catalogues and start planning for next spring...lol...as you are recovering. x

Thanks everyone, the big leaves have all gone now, I haven't got one of those tools Hackney, but I'm crossing my fingers. I think I got all the root. It's been a lovely day here and I've been able to get a lot of work done in the garden. This topsoil I had also has lots of nettles in it, do be careful Whistonlass. I don't think many people will lament the passing of this summer Hywel, on the whole, I think the autumn has been better, perhaps because we don't expect so much from it. :-)

2 Oct, 2010

Thanks Lincslass and Pansy, i want more heucheras too. The flowers are opening on the h.Havana now, I'll put a pic on when it's fully open. My h. Georgia Peach, a massive real beauty, had its roots eaten by vine weevil grubs:-(

2 Oct, 2010

Thanks Cristina, i think heucheras are such good value. Not many evergreens so decorative and have pretty flowers too. Thanks Daylily. Annella, what have you been doing to yourself? Whatever it is I hope you're better and fit for work or we'll never hear from you lol:-)

2 Oct, 2010

I'll be back on Monday Ba, I've had a bad run of migrains not helped by a cold :-))

2 Oct, 2010

Do you qualify for the new treatment? :-)

2 Oct, 2010

What a lovely lot of photographs and so many gorgeous heucharas! I had hoped to get some to liven up my garden before now but just haven't been able to get to a garden centre. I will put heuchara havana on my 'want' list. You've a very beautiful garden, Bornagain.

3 Oct, 2010

Thanks Gee, I get a lot of my plants on line as it's hard to get to garden centres without a car:-)

4 Oct, 2010

I checked out Plantagogo - lovely plants. I will have to make up my mind which ones I want most :)

4 Oct, 2010

That seems to be true about soil Whistonlass. When we sold our orchard to developers......would have stayed, but truly awful neighbours moved in next door. The first thing they did was take away the top soil down to about 2 foot. there would be glass and bits of car in that.....cables, door handles, sparking plugs. That's why we grassed it down mainly and gardened round the edges. When we had our current garden done over, we needed 2 lots of soil to fill up the raised borders. It looked ok when first spread, after it rained heavily there was a cascade of little tiny bits of brick and flint and ground up hardcore revealed at the bottom of the slight slope. What I called best mangled up builders rubble, added to bulk up the soil. I would say, go to a good garden centre, and see if they stock topsoil and use them. Then you have it sourced.

5 Oct, 2010

When the time comes I will ask around locally as there are quite a few garden centres nearby. I sure don't want to import any more weeds!! Thanks Dorjac.

5 Oct, 2010

Marmalade and Caramel are my best Heucheras. Spotlight has lovely leaves and Jade Gloss flowers all the time on tall strong stems. The plantagogo site is lovely Gee and so much info on Heucheras too.

5 Oct, 2010

lots of lovely plants.... : O ))

7 Oct, 2010

just the best time of year, your plants are superb.

7 Oct, 2010

Thanks Holly and Bizzyb:-)) I'm now wondering what to do with my cannas. I know I've had some advice on here somewhere, can't remember where though 8~/
