secret hide away in the woods...

every now and then i get to go to visit a friend of mine who lives in the woods. he has decided to go off on adventure on a house boat for a year and leave a friend watching over the woods. it is an ancient 90 acre woodland on a hill not far from where i live. the woods are managed by a small team and are use by different groups of people that can rent the woods for various things. this year has seen a couple of weddings, drum workshops, and sculpture weekends.

on the very bumpy drive up the hillside the first thing you come accross is this…

we know this house as the hobit house. its just idilic tucked away in the middle of the woods. all the wood was harvested on site..at the top of the hill is a clearing used for the weddings and workshops.

the guy who owns the woodland is an expert on eco buildings. they have erected a few building to house the workshops.

i think the walls are a work of art…

and no unluckily enough this isnt my camper van….

my daughter Rosie came down from university to sing for us. we had a lovely bonfire and camped the night. in the morning there was a lovely sunrise which put a new light on things.

its such a lovely place to be. the light through the trees was lovely. we sat and watched as the autumn leaves fluttered down like butterflys from the old oak trees.

we came back refreshed after a lovely time was had by all. hope you enjoyed the pics..;-))

Hey - perhaps we GoYers could all get together there...

19 Oct, 2009

Not sure what an open access woodland is and think it's marvelous that a team of people caretake it and allow you to spend time among the magical oaks and hobbit houses that have staved off "progress" so far. Thanks for taking us along.

Don't know how I missed this earlier but glad I found it now! What a magical place and, as you say, the walls are really a work of art. Saw something like it on TV some time ago, brilliant.

Thank you Sandra, a fascinating blog, Mystical Mysterious, I'd feel quite at home living there with all the wildlife...and something to charge-up my laptop battery. It's all so gentle on the eye unlike your average Wimpy house, though the later would be warmer, Lol. When you visit your friend in the wood, what do you talk about? He/she sounds like someone who would be interesting to listen to.

Hobbit sprang to mind immediately, first glimpse of first pic! Lovely stuff - I saw a Grand Designs once where this woodsman built his own house from just wood in the woodland - fantastic place, beautiful craftsmanship, not a bit of plastic, brick or upvc in sight.

24 Oct, 2009

It was amazing, wasn't it, Bamboo? I totally loved it & the cupboard in the treetrunk staircase was brilliant!

24 Oct, 2009

Ah, you saw it too!

24 Oct, 2009

I taped it!

Lovely blog Sandra and what a brilliant place, so romantic in the true sense of the word; and you can't beat a family sing-song can you:-)

24 Oct, 2009

25 Oct, 2009

lovely blog, Looks like a very spiritual and relaxing place to be, and to share it with friends and family even better.

thank you all for the lovely comments..;-))
the hobbit house has a wood burner in it, the windows are glazed and the walls have been 'mudded', its so cozy in there. the other buildings are open to the elemants, but as they are set in a small opening in the woods its like being surrounded in a blanket of oak. the fires burnt bright all night so we were warm. a bit different come bed time in tents and vans but we had lots of blankets and soon warmed up.
the sing-a-long was lovely we were lucky to have a few musicians who wanted to play.
there was a spiral staircase on one of the buildings it has rotted now. we used to sit on top. now its covered in brambles, grass, and daffodils in the spring.

25 Oct, 2009

Now that's what I call a night out Sandra, The smell of a wood fire, home made entertainment and presumably something good to drink like home brewed mead.

Love it all Sandra..perfect Nature homes..so glad you got to enjoy this!..the drums look just like the ones my grandaughters dad makes..he has been making them for years and years....my daughter made one, has it still and we all make use of it if it is close by.. :o)

15 Nov, 2009

i do love a good drum Cat. these are djemba drums. what wood does he use for his?

15 Nov, 2009

LOL..Sandra he is such a scrapper..he finds old wooden bowls .anything he can work with..pieces of wood all over..don't think he ever pays much for anything..just see's the wood..thumps it for sound and hauls it home..he has quite a warehouse of it last I saw..only see him once a year maybe when I go pick up my grand daughter from her visit with him in Eastern Washington. He has a vintage clothing shop full of all sorts of vintage garb and accessories that the kids love...and he makes and sells his drums there too...

15 Nov, 2009

sounds like my kind of shop...Cat . recycling my thing big time..

15 Nov, 2009
