Aeoniums in march..

Today was an aeonium day here at the nursery…..after another very cold winter im very pleased with what has come through….
the cuttings i took last october were ready for potting on. i only like to pot aeoniums into a slightly bigger pot , they seem to like this. the cutting went into plugs so i only potted them into 3 inch pots…
these aeonium aboureum were just bursting out of their plugs……zwartkop were not so eager but with a bit of care they were soon potted on aswell…along with rubra liniatum ..they all look happier now.
so i got most of the little ones done today and tomorrow i will consentrate on the bigger ones…
looking around at the others i was amazed to find what i think is flower buds on my aeonium cunniatum.
this new growth is what i normaly get. new shoots which provide me with my cuttings.
but this one is deffinately different…and theres a few comming…its so exciting…i will be keeping a eye on these….
these are a few of the new cuttings…
left is aeonium cunniatum…right is rubra liniatum
but my pride and joy is definately this…..
while i was enjoying potting all day..Lilly was off in my car with my camera and came back with these photos of our local beach. couldnt resist adding them..;-)
Happy Gardening…Sandra..;-)

Not yet Sandra but fingers crossed. I'm taking some cuttings from our plants that are being overwintered in the kitchen. It would be nice to see some flowers on the mother plants this year.

there is no rhyme or reason to the flowers in my expierience. mostly mine tend to flower in the autumn, but this one has never done it before.....

Thanks Sandra. I will let you know if we have any success with flowers this year.
All best wishes,

Swartkop.....does this one flower Sandra?.......lovely healthy looking cuttings you have there :o)

they all flower Amblealice...every now and then one or two pop them up...usualy (for me) in the autumn. no insects around then to polinate them. but if this is a flower and if it does manage to survive i might get some seed which would be amazing....

Good healthy cuttings Sandra, Do they sell well at the nursery? it's been another bad year for them hear in Cornwall, because we all leave them outside we've been caught out again, but I'm sure there are still a lot of survivors further down west, towards Penzance.

most of my garden ones died last year Pamd....so i was more careful this winter and brought more under cover...yes they do sell well, i have trouble keeping up with demand...

Sandra you have a beautiful selection, and your babies look so healthy, our black one is rather leggy compared to yours, how do you keep it looking so good in the winter?
Great beach photos.....

thank you all ;-)
the way to make aeonium bushy is to cut the main shoot....it seems harsh but it will reshoot within a few weeks. you also get a cutting from the top bit...

Sandra, thanks for this lovely pictures! Your Aeonoums are beautiful! Don't have any, so they are in my wish-list. :)

Uma they are so easy to look after...they thrive on neglect in the summer but they do need protection in the winter...

Thank you, Sandra, for the information! Think, I'll find some room in the house for one of these wonderful plants...:)

I would like to have a go at growing aeoniums....and it's something I could do in the house as I have no greenhouse. They are beautiful and the photos of the beach....well, wow...lovely :)

thanks Whistonlass.
i have realy enjoyed bringing all my plants back indoors this week. they look great when they are all together.
aeoniums like an even temp in the winter.. so avoid the living-room better in the passage or porch or bathroom. and its very important to let them dryout in the winter, i have watered my big pots now and will try to avoid doing it again till spring. smaller pots will need topping up once or twice but less is definately best...

Thanks for the advice, Sandra. I would probably just start with one bowl and see how I get on...and I'll not overwater or too warm a room.
