Hi Terry and Toto ~
I'm glad you like this Easter pic. :o)

Today Conker is playing lots of string toy tug games with Truffle..... trying to pull out as many pricky puppy teeth as he can. Lol.

Yes, thanks. :o)
More cheerful here now. :o)

9 Apr, 2009

That's beautiful TT. Are those the same flowers as in the photo with Bonsai ?

9 Apr, 2009

Wow this is what I call a real show stopper! just breathtaking. another for my favourites! Dont know how you manage that beautiful garden and give all the care and attention to Conker and Truffle that you do!

9 Apr, 2009

Yes, Hywel. Well-spotted. It is the same front garden, but photographed with a digital camera.
I took the photo closer in, so as not to include the grass area where Bonsai sat.... :o(

Hi Pansypotter ~
I'm pleased you like this one. I hope Polly is still perky ?
I'm lucky that Conker and Truffle help me with the gardening...Lol.

9 Apr, 2009

Your garden certainly has the wow factor, TT, fabulous - definitely a favourite.

9 Apr, 2009

Hello Gee ~
Thank you.
As the aubrieta spreads, the postman finds he's walking along an ever-narrowing path . Lol

9 Apr, 2009

Jacque ~ Lol
I've just noticed your comment higher up, about Truffle smiling for Summer. Lol.

Hello Sanbaz ~
Thanks. I walked along that path with Conker yesterday and we had to go single file. Lol.

9 Apr, 2009

Just stunning.Colours blending together beautifully. Haven't seen much aubrieta out here yet; how long will it last, right through the summer?

9 Apr, 2009

Hi Ginellie ~
Aubrieta flowers for a few weeks.
Basically a springtime flower, but I love it... :o)

9 Apr, 2009

See how much I have to learn. Never mind, enjoying the process and love seeing everyone's photographs.

9 Apr, 2009

Ooh, TT.......you don't post that many pics but when you do they are spectacular!
It looks absolutely gorgeous!! I bet Bonsai is smiling down on your wonderful Aubretia.....:o)

9 Apr, 2009

Thanks, Janey ~
I do think of darling Bonsai when I see the aubrieta....

9 Apr, 2009

Straight onto my favourites- absolutely beautiful! Living tapestry.

9 Apr, 2009

Wagger ~ I'm so pleased you like this one...
Living tapestry ~ what a wonderful description :o)

Aubrieta has happy memories for me going back to childhood, and some of the paler purple in this photo originates from the house where I was born...

9 Apr, 2009

My soil is too heavy for Aubretia - I'm doing a raised bed for my Sedum Spurium Coccineum together with some Sempervivum, Saxifrage and a few other bits and pieces still to come.

9 Apr, 2009

Lovely lot of colours there TT.It is nice to see lots of different coloured Aubretia together...

9 Apr, 2009

Wagger ~ have you actually tried growing aubrieta ?
Maybe on a piece of soil where you've mixed in lots of stones ?
I reckon it would grow. It isn't so very fussy.
If you like, I'll send you a piece when I send the sedum and you can try it ?

Tina. Hello. :o) Thanks.
Yes, I like to see the different colours of aubrieta together.
Spritz has a nice pink aubrieta. I shall try to get that next... ... I don't mean I'll steal her plants. LOL.

9 Apr, 2009

Hi TT we have just brought a few more coloured ones though I think mine are more a dark pink as opposed to a light pink, unless you mean the dark coloured pink.We seem to struggle on our clay soil to grow them properly but we keep trying though at the moment they are still quiet small plants...

9 Apr, 2009

Tina ~ try to not water the actual leaves....
If watering is needed, then I find it better to keep the soil damp, with rain water....
Dark pink sounds good. Maybe you'll be able to eventually put pictures on GoY of your aubrietas.

9 Apr, 2009

LOL TT, worth it though, :)

9 Apr, 2009

Yes, Sanbaz ~
I'm really glad Conker's little feet stepped neatly around the aubrieta.
Hoping we have no postmen with size 12 feet for the next few weeks.... Lol.

9 Apr, 2009

TT, your front garden look absolutely stunning. Aubrieta always makes an excellent splash of colour and with the different shades and the Grape Hyacinths to compliment you have certainly made a dazzling show......Kew...........eat your heart out...........

9 Apr, 2009

Well, thanks, Milky ...
That's a special compliment. :o)

9 Apr, 2009

WOW TT, Stunning display, I love purple flowers, Beautifull..

9 Apr, 2009

Hi Dee ~
Thank you. This does rather give the message that I like aubrieta... Lol.

9 Apr, 2009

lovely shades TT! gorgeous! If you have any seeds after they flowerI wouldn't mind some?

9 Apr, 2009

Never tried growing aubrieta from seeds, Arlene ~
I usually split the plants if I want them to multiply.
I'll have a go at collecting some seeds ....

9 Apr, 2009

Thanks a lot TT~It is really very pretty!

9 Apr, 2009

My soil seems to suit the aubrieta. :o)

9 Apr, 2009

Absolutely beautiful a stunning display of colour well done TT.

9 Apr, 2009

Overwhelming * * * * * 5 stars for you! : )

9 Apr, 2009

Wow spectacular - love the colours. It's definitely a favourite.

10 Apr, 2009

Hello Scottie ~
Thanks. I'm pleased you like this one.
Aubrieta does make a rainbow of colours. :o)

Hi Wohlibuli ~ Five stars ! Wow ~ thank you ! :o)

Avis ~ thanks for the history of this pretty rockery plant. I'd not heard that before. I'm sure Claude would have painted this very well...
Happy Easter to you ....

Hi Bernieh ~ I like the colours, too. Where do you think in these borders I should plant the pink aubrieta ? ~ if I can find some ......

10 Apr, 2009

TT I think the only spots left for your pink (if you get it) is up around those fabulous hyacinths! Have never tried to grow these wonderful aubrieta plants (we call them 'rock cress') but seeing this display makes me think - perhaps!

10 Apr, 2009

Oh, definitely give them a go, Bernieh. Poaannua says that the young seedlings get attacked by slugs and snails, but my adult plants do not get chewed at all, despite lots of slugs and snails in my gardens...

As I mentioned above, I've found that aubrieta prefers rainwater. It doesn't mind being rained on naturally from the sky ( lol ), but if watering by hand, try to not water the leaves, wet the soil instead..

If you have success, please post some photos and send me a p.m. so that I don't miss them ! Thanks...

... and, yes, the pink can go by the grape hyacinths.. :o)

10 Apr, 2009

Oh dear my list of 'things to try in my garden' has grown considerably since I joined this site - but I will definitely give these a go as they come in my favourite colours. Thanks TT.

10 Apr, 2009

Bernieh ~
Aubrieta will take up only a little bit of space on your list. Lol.

This photo was taken with a digital camera. A couple of years ago, with another style of camera, I took a picture of aubrieta, which featured my old Welsh Terrier, "Bonsai". You can see the photo on GoY, next to the pictures of my dogs with their toy lawnmowers. This photo probably has a truer representation of the red shades. The above picture shows the mauves and purples very well. I hope this helps. x

10 Apr, 2009

Oh absolutely gorgeous

10 Apr, 2009

Thanks, Lillyb :o)

10 Apr, 2009

Spectacular show TT weather much milder with you I think .

10 Apr, 2009

Hi Scotkat ~
Yes, much milder here today.
Rain is forecast. How about with you ?
I hope you have a lovely Easter ~

Very, very pretty, Tt! A front garden to be proud of. No wonder you are interested in aubrieta - but I think you've probably got most of them, haven't you?

10 Apr, 2009

Thanks Deida ~
And I mustn't forget to tell you ~
the long tail tits were back in my garden yesterday !

Thank you, Spritz.
I'm still hoping for some pale pink aubrieta...

Also, I think you've planted variegated ones which I don't have here....
... I like the aubrieta on your walls and steps :o)

10 Apr, 2009

Thats beautiful TT............

10 Apr, 2009

10 Apr, 2009

Hi Pottygardener ~
Happy Easter. :o)

Hello Zandra ~
I'm sure you'll love your Aubrieta. It lasts year after year. When it has finished flowering, you can give it a little bit of a "haircut" to keep it tidy. That will also help it to grow better for the following year.

10 Apr, 2009

Lovely, lots of differing shades.

10 Apr, 2009

Thanks, Paul. :o)

10 Apr, 2009

And Happy Easter to you as well TT. :-)

10 Apr, 2009

Love this picture but can i squeeze my motorbike through the plants, no only joking TT.
Love Roger

10 Apr, 2009

Roger ~ with your expert motor-biking skills, you could weave along my front path doing wheelies and not one petal of aubrieta would be damaged. Lol.x

11 Apr, 2009

Gorgeous TT, this is one plant i don't have i must get some!!

11 Apr, 2009

Glorious TT! Brilliant!

12 Apr, 2009

HI there TT :o)
I was looking at google, we have some flowers very similar, but I'm not sure they are Aubrietas!
I'll find out!! :o))

12 Apr, 2009

Further up this thread, Bernieh, says she calls this plant rock cress.
She's going to try growing Aubrieta in Australia :o)

14 Apr, 2009

Wow! Beautiful photo!

14 Apr, 2009

I don't think I have ever seen such lovely banks of aubrieta alongside a path. It looks really good.

15 Apr, 2009

I agree with you, Bulbaholic. Amazing - I must see if it's hardy here. Wow! Well done, TT.

15 Apr, 2009

what a lovely pathway TT, i can see why you like Aubrieta so much this is truely stunning, a wonderful Easter treat.

16 Apr, 2009

Thanks everyone for your comments.
I really love aubrieta and recommend it.
Back in February my gardens were under ice and about ten inches of snow, but the plants survived well, and the Aubrieta has burst into life..

16 Apr, 2009

16 Apr, 2009

16 Apr, 2009

Hello Amy.
Yet it's wonderful to have the aubrieta welcome me when I get home.
The postman, so far, has been very good about not treading on it. Lol.

Thanks, Helen.
I'm pleased you like it, too. :o)

16 Apr, 2009

This is lovely. Do they come up year after year? What do they look like in winter? Thanks!

16 Apr, 2009

Hello Michaella ~
All year they will be small green clumps of foliage, then in spring they flower in various shades. You can choose pinks, purples, and reds.

I suggest you "pick and mix" for a sort of rainbow effect. Best to give the clumps a haircut after flowering or they will spread too far across your path.

Has that answered everything ? Ask away, if you would like to know more...
It is such a lovely flower, I like to write and talk about it... :o)

16 Apr, 2009

Thank you so much Terratounie. Now I just need to buy them.

16 Apr, 2009

Lol. Michaella ~
I bought a red Aubrieta today. Just got to find a space for it.
I want to get pink aubrieta. I think that might have to be mail order...

16 Apr, 2009

I would love to see this when I go outdoors....would make my day!!! Great picture and so colorful

17 Apr, 2009

Hi Skippy ~
Nice to see you back on GoY.
I missed you....
I'm glad you like this picture :o)

17 Apr, 2009

love these flowers. we tried to grow some to hang over our low patio walls, but they didn't amount to anything. We are getting new soil tomorrow, to replenish what we have now, so hopefully will have better luck next time we try to grow these. Are they aubretias?

27 Apr, 2009

Hello Alandrapal ~
Welcome to GoY :o)
All the purple shades in the photo are types of aubrieta.
Some do seem more hardy than others.
Good luck next time you try.

27 Apr, 2009

thanks for the welcome, Terratoonie. I keep seeing these lovely aubretias trailing over peoples' garden walls, and am getting so envious :) I think our soil nourishment has been depleted over the years, so this new soil being delivered tomorrow should help a lot. BTW, love the photo of your dog pushing the doll carriage (at least, believe that it's a doll pram).

27 Apr, 2009

Hi Alandra ~
I've found that aubrieta prefers rainwater to tap water, and try to water the soil around, rather than the plants themselves...
My dogs all learn tricks....
I'm glad you like the one with the doll pram...
Did you see one of the first photos I put on GoY of Conker the Sheltie vacuuming the lawn ? Lol. :o)

27 Apr, 2009

One word sums up that entrance "STUNNING".

Andy

27 Apr, 2009

Thanks, Andy.
I'm glad you like this...
.. aubrieta gives a good show for many weeks..
It's still flowering there now...

27 Apr, 2009

looool,very pretty!

28 Apr, 2009

Thank you, Drfadi... :o)

28 Apr, 2009

i put up a fence, painted it, some kid kicked it down
put in a pond got bubble bath in it
put in a water feature, same treatment

now i have given up, taken out all the top soil and and put down a couple of tons of chard flint and a specimen plant set in circular brick pattern.

i really am envious of front gardens like yours.
dave

29 Apr, 2009

Hi Dave ~
Over the years there have been times when my garden flowers have been flattened by teenagers playing football in the road, so I understand your frustrations over vandalism. Your flint idea is a well thought out answer....

1 May, 2009

Hi TT, what do these beautiful flowers like? there are too many posts to try to find the answer, again, so if you don't mind saying it once more, if you already did. Are they the same as phlox? Thank you!

1 May, 2009

your pathway looks fantastic with all that colour

1 May, 2009

Wow! wow !Thats beautiful ! I have been dreaming to have something like that for ages.Well done.

1 May, 2009

Hello Poetgardener ~
Aubrieta plants are different from Phlox. If you look at recent photos by Toto, he has uploaded close-up pics. of two individual aubrieta flowers.. I hope this helps..
Please let me know if I haven't answered your question with enough detail and I'll try to help more...

2 May, 2009

Hi Islander and Shapla ~
One of the good things about aubrieta is that it flowers for so many weeks.
I'm pleased you like it.... :o)

2 May, 2009

Awesome Spring display TT ! Love the way you blended the colors together.

5 May, 2009

Hello Flcrazy ~
Aubrieta is available in so many lovely colours, that it's really fun blending them.

5 May, 2009

Hi TT, Thanks for answering my question. I'll look at Toto's. Very beautiful, I must say. I'm really hoping to SOMEDAY get a display like this of SOMETHING!
lovely.

6 May, 2009

Oh, and by the way, I truly love the grape hyacinths. One of my most favorite flowers. Looks like a picture! (as opposed to a photograph! :-))

6 May, 2009

Hi Poetgardener ~
Thanks again...
Glad I've put lots of your favourite flowers in one picture. Lol.

6 May, 2009

What amazing colour. What flowers are they??

7 May, 2009

Hi Zombie ~
Most of the flowers in the picture are different shades of aubrieta.
You can also see blue grape hyacinths in several places, including top right near the daffodils..

7 May, 2009

Wonderful colors. I have tried to grow aubriet several times in different spots and it never survives.

20 May, 2009

I wonder if your soil is not suitable for aubrieta...
Could you try growing it in a stone container ?

20 May, 2009

WOW! TT sorry not to have caught up with this picture of your gorgeous garden before. I've not been on GOY for a while but so pleased to have seen this! No wonder you have had so many comments.
Jo x

7 Jun, 2009

Hi Jo ~
I'm glad to have you back on GoY ~
Thanks for visiting my aubrieta :o)

7 Jun, 2009

i love your aubretia . I AM TRYING TO GROW SOME from seed at the moment they are very small seedlings////// I will let you know when I even get one plant never mind this beautiful array! lol

21 Jun, 2009

Hello Marydoll ~
Yes, do please let me know how you get on growing aubrieta from seed.
It's a lovely plant to have in the garden :o)

21 Jun, 2009

Oh TT, I have bad news about my Aurbieta. After I commented on the grape hiacinth in May, I went out to my garden and realized I had purchased some of the aubrieta from the local supermarket. I was so excited seeing how yours was so beautiful. I haven't had much flowering due to all the rain and gloomy weather, but it gets worse. One day last week I was standing in the rain inspecting the garden from afar and it seemed that something was missing. I went closer and realized that the Aubrieta had been swept into a gopher hole by the whirling rapids of my neighbors puddles, that begin uphill from my flower bed!!! I was scared to put my hand down the hole to pull it out, and finally today when I got closer and the sun was out and I had my garden gloves on, it was REALLY gone! So, I'm down one, 3 to go. lol....

Hope that gives you a little laugh!

xopg

22 Jun, 2009

Wow ~
There are some dangers in my gardens but not gopher holes ! Lol.
Good luck with your three remaining aubrieta plants. xxx

22 Jun, 2009

Oh my goodness, that is so stunning. I would love to sit on the path and just keep looking.

25 Jun, 2009

7 Aug, 2009

What a stunning shot - fabulous range of blue-purples, must really make your front garden a welcoming place.

10 Aug, 2009

Hi Tess ~
Thanks. Aubrieta has such a wonderful range of mauve, blue, pink and purple....:o)

10 Aug, 2009

This is terrific Tt..I attempted to grow about 80/100 (Purple Cascade) from seed this year, I have about 8 wee things that are still struggling.

10 Sep, 2009

Hi Garden fool ~
What do you think killed the seedlings ? Slugs ? Wrong soil ? Too wet ? Too dry ? Did you use rainwater ?

Thanks for visiting my aubrieta path... glad you liked it. :o)

10 Sep, 2009

Hi Terratoonie
I don't know why they didn't do well. They were planted in fresh potting compost, placed in a light window. They a got to about an inch high so I moved them outside under glass. All through the hot spell and through this long wet spell they have done so poorly. They spent a month in a neighbours poly tunnel while we were away (with auto-watering). I'll post a photo later. Our house water is fed from a stream so everything gets rain/ground water, including us.
Thanks for posting the picture, its in my favourites for inspiration.

10 Sep, 2009

Thanks for putting this pic on your favourites !
Do you think slugs or snails were eating the seedlings ?
Were they in the shade under glass ?
Was the compost too acidic ?
Was the drainage sufficient ?
Please put a comment here when you've posted the photo, so I don't miss it. Thanks. :o)

10 Sep, 2009

Hi Terra,
Sorry I missed your reply.
It wasn't slugs and they were shaded. During the really hot spell they out of glass and partially (mostly) shaded.
I don't know if it was too acid a compost.
The drainage seemed fine to me with plenty of crocks and holes but it has been such a wet summer maybe I was mistaken.

Thanks Terra
G fool

WOW What a perfect colour harmony
